Steel balls are classified into three types: forged steel balls, cast steel balls, and hot-rolled steel balls.
Forged steel balls are made by forging round steel segments using an air hammer. The wear resistance of forged steel balls is highly dependent on the material and impurities of the round steel used.
The main materials for forged steel balls are 45# steel, as well as 50Mn, 60Mn, and 65Mn. Currently, 75MNCR material offers wear resistance comparable to high-chromium balls. Advantages of forged steel balls include a breakage rate of less than 1%, good wear resistance, low price, and high cost-effectiveness.
In cast steel balls, chromium alloy is the main component. They have poor oxidation resistance and resistance to high-sulfur, diesel fuel, and seawater corrosion. Their strength and density are lower than forged steel balls, and their breakage rate is significantly higher than other types of steel balls. Based on chromium content, wear-resistant balls can be classified as follows:
1. Chromium content 1%-3%, hardness HRC≥45. 1. **Low-chromium alloy cast balls:** These standard wear-resistant steel balls are produced using medium-frequency electric furnace smelting and metal mold or sand casting methods. Their performance is suitable for industries such as metallurgy, mining, and slag processing where grinding precision requirements are not high and wear is not significant.
2. **Chromium content 4%-6%, hardness HRC≥47:** These are called multi-alloy balls, with slightly higher strength and wear resistance than low-chromium steel balls.
3. **Medium-chromium alloy cast balls:** These have a chromium content of 7%-10% and a hardness HRC≥50, offering superior performance compared to multi-alloy steel balls.
4. **High-chromium alloy cast balls:** These have a chromium content ≥10%-14% and a hardness HRC≥58. These are widely used in the cement industry due to their good wear resistance. However, their low cost-effectiveness, resulting in lower market share, has led to their replacement by forged products.
5. **Chromium content exceeding 14%, hardness HRC≥58:** This type of high-chromium steel ball is suitable for industries requiring fine grinding and high wear. Naturally, its price is also quite high, and its cost-effectiveness is slightly lower than that of regular high-chromium balls.
Hot-rolled steel balls: Depending on the raw materials used, the performance of the steel balls varies. They can be broadly categorized as follows, taking a 100mm steel ball as an example:
1. Surface HRC 55-60, core hardness 20-25
2. Surface hardness 55-60, core hardness 30-35
3. Surface hardness 58-63, core hardness 40-45
